Sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I’ve been struggling with getting my Gentoo desktop computer back fuctioning again for the last 2 weeks. I updated to Xorg 7.0 which then threw my Radeon driver into fits. So, I thought, why not change from the open ATI driver to the proprietary ati-drivers? It’s managed by a big corporation, by the very people who manufactured by video card, so it should be better, right?
Wrong-o. I ended up with the same problems the previous two times I compiled it. Besides a number of minor irritants, and my general aversion to things proprietary, I can’t get my vertical refresh rate above 60Hz. And it forces me into a 1600 x 1200 resolution which is just too small for normal humans. The whole thing is just painful to look at. And that’s where I type up these wonderful reviews, which means no output until it’s fixed.
But I think I found a solution with the HOWTO DRI with ATi Open-Source Drivers. I was going to give it a try tonight, but I have to go in for goddamn jury duty tomorrow. Which meant I was getting some things taken care of tonight just in case I end up chosen and sequestered.
So, as soon as I’m back and have the display problems resolved, I can get back to regular posting.
