Ultimate X-Men # 71
Writer: Robert Kirkman; Pencils: Ben Oliver; Inks: Jonathan Glapion;
Ultimate X-Men has outlasted its welcome. Perhaps it’s the lackluster dialogue from Kirkman. Perhaps because I lost interest in the story due to the confusing and pointless battle over at Emma Frost’s academy. Or perhaps it’s due to the Ultimate universe’s determination to relive every moment of the regular Marvel universe’s past, regardless of how silly or ridiculous the original stories were.
Now, I realize that there is a small city worth of fanboys out there who think that the Phoenix storyline is worth giving ones front teeth for. And from the looks of a number of convention-goers, they took the teeth thing literally. But, look around on the web and find a synopsis of the Phoenix storyline. It doesn’t read as quite so amazing today, and only retains some value because it’s viewed through 20-year-old memories.
The Ultimate universe, and Ultimate X-Men especially, would be better off if much of the Marvel past was ditched and the writers concentrated on writing totally new stories.
Added: And the little green things that surround Jean Grey at the end are not creepy as intended. They look like Play Dough. If anyone wants to make small, creepy demon-like guys, take a lesson from Maleev’s work on Daredevil 71-75.
