Quick notes on The Ultimates Annual # 2:
- This story isn’t entirely sure exactly what kind of story it is. It might be a story about race and race relations. It might be a simple action story, but it jumps around too much to make the action matter. It might be a hundred different things, but it doesn’t do any of them well enough to stand out.
- Annuals are great because they tell self-contained stories. Annuals typically fail because the stories are rarely very good. Put a good story in an annual and it might become a decent enough jumping-on point for new readers.
- Perhaps overheard in the Marvel offices: “The fans aren’t demanding it. We know it won’t be very good. But, dammit, we need an Arnim Zola story no matter how forced it seems.”
