Super-Villain Team-Up # 1: Modok's 11 cover

On the new-books’ shelf, Super-Villain Team-Up looks exactly like the kind of comic I would skip over. Not only skip over, but it looks like the type of comic that makes me dismiss Marvel as a decent publisher. Modok is prominently featured on the cover, which typically points to a writer or editor who believes Marvel history is full of amazing characters brought to life with brilliant writing. And most of those same characters and storylines are complete garbage regardless of what the comic book purists believe.

Thankfully, Super-Villain Team-Up: Modok’s 11 is way, way better than it looks. Van Lente proved himself a competent writer with Action Philosophers, and his smart writing keeps the entire issue fun and entertaining. Modok and his team of third stringers may be lame, but anyone who can make Ayn Rand, Socrates, and Voltaire amusing will likely maintain that same quality through the five issues of Super-Villain Team-Up.
