Powers # 23 (Vol 2)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis; Pencils and Inks: Mike Avon Oeming; Coloring: Peter Pantazis; Lettering: Chris Eliopoulos;
Marvel/Icon

An issue ago, I was ready to dump Powers. Every story read as pretty directionless and mostly confusing. This issue rescued Powers from getting the axe on my monthly pull list, even if only temporarily.
Powers was beginning to feel a bit like ABC’s Lost: just keep adding more mystery and weirdness and hope no one notices the lack of plot. Walker’s ageless powers begin making sense and have purpose. Pilgrim’s new powers also fit with the series-spanning plot line of the ageless super-beings. In short, something is actually happening in the story.
It will be interesting to see if Bendis delivers a decent payoff with the current direction of Powers. Given his massive numbers of monthly writing gigs, it’s very possible that he’s been watered down to a point where he isn’t performing at his best. Hopeful that he will return to the previous goodness of early Powers, I’m giving the book another chance.
