In a time when the Left Behind series captured North America’s imagination, Therefore Repent! arrived as a rejoinder to the Christian fetishization of the Rapture. The story begins with the faithful already in heaven, and those left on earth spit into two groups: people attempting to live a faithful life so that they may be raised up in a second Rapture, and those who attempt to live in a post-Christian world.
The story centers on a couple dealing with the chance that their relationship may end and that Heaven’s army of angels may kill them all off regardless of how their personal issues resolve. Ultimately, the story asks us to consider that our ideas have consequences and the world we create is one of them. It’s a concept worth some thought, and Therefore Repent! is a story worth reading.
