The Goon # 24

Eric Powell’s recent work on The Goon cements my opinion that he made the right decision in turning over the coloring work to someone else. This issue only includes the reappearance of The Buzzard, the creepiest character to ever appear in The Goon, but also has an intro story of cannibalism and unthinkable familial betrayal. The jokes and wacky situations which characterized the earlier issues are now boosted by what appears to be some very solid storytelling. I suspect that Powell always had some ambitious stories to tell, but handling everything in the book limited his time.

In addition to the creepy main story, The Fillbach Brothers do a fine backup piece, capturing The Goon’s humor quite well. Their work with this short story convinced me that I have to pick up their Maxwell Strangewell trade eventually.
