As I wrote before, I can’t exactly place why Warren Ellis bothers me. Desolation Jones # 1 is functionally perfect. We are introduced to the main characters quite smoothly. There is a minimum amount of narrative, with the artwork and dialogue carrying most of the story. The characters are decently fleshed out with believable personalities. Nothing stands out as horrible, but there’s still something that doesn’t sit right with me.
Maybe it’s that Ellis’ protagonists always speak with the same voice. Maybe it’s the way each story plods along like a constipated mule. I’m not sure what it is, but some aspect of Ellis’ work grates on me even when his work is passable to good.
If nothing else, Desolation Jones is worth it for Williams’ art. The look reminds me of Tony Harris’ run on Starman, and I love that look with the thicker ink. Even if the story drags on, it will be worth buying simply to look at the art. And chances are good that the story will move very slowly, so there should be plenty of time to look at the nice artwork.
