Batman # 657
Writer: Grant Morrison; Pencils: Andy Kubert; Inks: Jesse Delperdang;
– This is an age of stretching a mediocre story, barely worthy to a single issue, into a five-parter “for the trade.” Morrison takes what most comic writers today would drag into a full-year so-so multi-book crossover and packs it into a few issues. And it’s about time someone did it.
– Damian isn’t a full-grown Joker or Scarecrow or Bane. He’s just a kid, but already as nasty as many of Batman’s opponents. Batman and Bruce Wayne are confronted with an evil that they don’t know how to handle, and largely unwilling to identify as evil. It will be interesting to see how far Morrison can push this.
– As soon as this issue really showed Damian’s deep anger, I wondered: Will Damian turn Oedipal on us?
– But as much as I love this book, “Damian” was picked as the kids name?
