All Star Superman # 5
Writer: Grant Morrison; Pencils: Frank Quitely; Inks: Jamie Grant;
A few quick notes on All Star Superman # 5:
- This issue is a great story of tragic flaws, and Lex Luthor’s complete carelessness with which Lex treats Clark Kent is a fascinating example. Luthor’s tragic flaw seems to be his intelligence and his arrogance about it. It creates in him an undeserved sense of invulnerability. If he’d stop for a few seconds and consider that there might be someone who was his equal or was getting one over on him, he could avoid a lot of his problems.
- Luthor’s Bibliobot Mark 2 begins to recite from two books: Dickens A Tale of Two Cities and Joyce’s Ulysses. While Morrison is likely hinting at various themes from both books, particularly the issue of redemption, of note is the fact that both books were originally serialized novels. It’s likely no accident that Morrison’s serialized story refers to two other serialized stories.
- Morrison yet again does a fantastic job at creating real human beings out of characters who normally exist as cardboard cutouts. It’s nice to not be complaining about a book for a change.
